Exposition
Acknowledged as a key figure of the post-war abstract movement, inspired by lyrical abstraction, by Japanese art and by his journeys to India, the artist’s trajectory is as original as it is little known. Born in Brittany, he started his painter’s career in 1950 in Pont-Aven, in Paul Gauguin’s former studio.
He participated in several group exhibitions at the Salon d’Automne in Paris and worked for the Keraluc faience factory in Quimper. His artwork is now being preserved and exhibited in many major public collections.
The itinerary of the exhibition reflects the diversity of Xavier Krebs’ artistic career. It tells the story of an evolution towards abstraction, contemplation and meditation. The exhibition unfolds in three different locations which interact and respond to each other: at the Chapelle des Ursulines, his paintings are presented in chronological order; at the Maison des Archers, the exhibition focuses on his Breton roots, his notebooks and his various collaborations, while at the médiathèque, the artist’s memory and influences are highlighted.
