I sat upon the shoreT.S. Eliot, The Waste Land, 1922
The poet T.S. Eliot published in 1922 The Waste Land, a poem in verse that marks modern literature. This poem inspired Gregory Eddi Jones, who directed a century later, his series Promise Land. The artist chooses to glean images (advertisements, newspaper articles, etc.) on the Internet to illustrate the poet’s scenes. Then comes an experimental phase where he grinds the images that he has appropriated (by digital retouching then by adding water to the inks once drawn on paper). Finally, the artist composes a piece of visual music, a symphony of distorted images like the notes of a brass band playing outside in a noisy street.
Gregory Eddi Jones is a post-photographic artist who explores methods of appropriation and reauthorship as means to form conversant bridges between past and present cultural and technological conditions. He has exhibited and published his work internationally, and his latest monograph, Promise Land, was published by SPBH Editions in 2021.
