Résidence
For several years, Carla Adra has been gathering intimate testimonies and giving them voice through her performances. These voices, fragile because they are bound to the ephemerality of performance, now raise the question of their afterlife—of what remains once the action has ended.
Her residency with galerie art & essai + EUR CAPS at the University of Rennes 2 focuses on this already existing material. The intention is not to collect new voices, but to explore those that have already been entrusted to her: how to sort them, classify them, move them, let them circulate. How to care for them? This research draws on meetings with scholars in anthropology, sociology, and archival studies, whose methods will both inform and challenge her artistic approach. To move forward, she employs various techniques—maps, photographs—tools that make it possible to test different paths, to discover provisional forms of classification, and to open up new ways of inhabiting the archive.
Throughout the residency, Carla searches for the most fitting artistic form to host this library of sensitive voices.

Lecture by the artist, November 27, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m., Amphitheater D1 Descartes, University of Rennes 2.
Carla Adra (born in 1993 in Toronto, lives in Paris) develops a performative and visual practice in which relationships with others become material. Her performances, installations, videos, drawings, and writings gather and shift personal narratives in order to question how voices circulate and how the self may recede within another’s experience. She creates sensitive frameworks that make often-disqualified voices audible, at the crossroads of art, oral memory, and social connection.
A faculty member at ENSAPC since 2024, she also leads numerous workshops and residencies. Her work has recently been presented at the Palais de Tokyo, Frac MECA, argos (Brussels), Kunsthalle Mulhouse, 40mcube (Rennes), and the Marina Abramovic Institute (Amsterdam, London).
