Imitation of comics

Thierry Van Hasselt was born in 1969. Draftsman, graphic designer, scenographer, editor and professor at the École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc in Brussels, he is a founding member of the Fréon and Frémok editions, which proudly carry the colors and demands of graphic literature. He is also very involved in Frémok’s collaboration with La “S” Grand Atelier, a center for contemporary raw art, particularly through the “Knock Outsider” collection.

As such, he was invited to share with Christophe Desforges the curatorship of the “Itinéraires graphiques du Pays de Lorient #7”.

In parallel with his role as editor within Frémok, Thierry Van Hasselt is a draftsman and painter.
He presents in the gallery of the EESAB-Site of Lorient a set of oil paintings: The imitation of the comic strip (a reference to the filmmaker’s ‘The imitation of cinema‘ Belgian surrealist Marcel Marien), whose device takes the form of a story, an improbable scenario of a non-animated film, structured by still shots. The sequence of the canvases, the editing of the images arouse the idea of ​​a displacement, of a location in the rooms of a house where points of view alternate between the interiors and the exteriors. The interplay of framing focuses on still lifes, reflections, paintings, the presence of bodies. Clues that accumulate and punctuate the slow intrusion into an intimate space.
